What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty, also known as “ear pinning”, is a procedure that changes the shape, position, or size of the ears, and can be performed at any age once the ears have reached their full size (usually after age 7). Dr. Molina’s goal with this surgery is to create a more natural shape while bringing balance and proportion to the ears and face.

What are the benefits of Otoplasty?

Otoplasty can address:

  • Overly large ears – a condition called macrotia
  • Protruding ears on one or both sides
  • Dissatisfaction with previous ear surgery
  • Lack of self-esteem due to large ears
  • Imbalance in facial appearance

Who Are the Best Candidates for an Otoplasty?

The best candidates for otoplasty have the following characteristics:

  • Protruding or asymmetrical ears that cause self-consciousness or dissatisfaction with appearance
  • Completed ear development, which typically occurs around age seven
  • Positive outlook and specific goals for otoplasty
  • Baseline good health with no life-threatening illness or medical conditions that can impair healing
  • Nonsmokers

Otoplasty First Step

What’s the first step?

The first step in getting an otoplasty in New York City is to schedule a consultation. During this session, you will meet Dr. Molina, who will understand your areas of concern, obtain a medical history, and examine your ears and face. She will then discuss surgical treatment options that are specific to your anatomy and goals.

If you are deemed a good candidate for this procedure and would like to move forward, a surgical quote for otoplasty will be provided and our Concierge Team will assist you with scheduling.

We will also provide you with preoperative instructions to follow that will help make your procedure as successful as possible. This list can include fasting for a certain amount of time and avoiding certain medications such as blood thinners.

How is Otoplasty Surgery Done?

Oftentimes, an incision is placed on the back of your ear hidden in the ear crease. Correction of protruding ears is done with various techniques, depending on the problem. Internal, permanent sutures can reshape the ear to make it look less protruding. In some cases, extra cartilage is removed or reshaped with a rasp. The final step is to close the incision with external, removable sutures. It is important to set the ears at an equal distance on both sides.

After surgery, antibiotic ointment is applied to the incisions and a snug head wrap applied to protec the ears in the first couple of days. Sutures are generally removed in 1 week.

Otoplasty Recovery

Moderate discomfort immediately following otoplasty is normal and can be controlled with pain medication, which is usually only necessary for a day or two.

No pressure should be applied to the ears, so it is critical to sleep on your back and not on your side. The head wrap can be removed in 2 days and will be done by Dr. Molina in the office.
