Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid Surgery Introduction

The eyes are the focal points of our interaction with others, and the eyelids are one of the biggest complaints as people age. The lower lid tends to sag, fat bulges create bags, and skin becomes wrinkled. The upper eyelids become heavy and weighed down with excess skin and fat. People complain that they look tired, old, or sad, which is not how they actually feel. Oftentimes, it is difficult to put makeup on the eyes due to aging. Upper and lower eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a common cosmetic procedure to allow for a rejuvenated look. If you are considering eyelid surgery in the Manhattan area, consult with board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bianca Molina

Dr. Molina understands the importance of safe medical care while simultaneously achieving successful results that can rejuvenate your eyes. Below, we have included some details that include patient suitability, benefits of surgery, details about the procedure, and the recovery process.

What is a Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, also called a Blepharoplasty, is a very delicate cosmetic surgical procedure that removes or repositions the puffy fat around the eyes and removes excess skin as needed. It targets various concerns such as under-eye bags, puffiness, excess skin, and wrinkles, which can contribute to a tired or aged appearance. Surgery can be done on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.

What Are the Benefits of Eyelid Surgery?

The overall effect of eyelid surgery is to give you back a younger and more refreshed look. Some of the more common and sought-after benefits of a Blepharoplasty include:

  • Reduced under-eye bags
  • Improved eye contour
  • Minimized fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improved ability to use eye makeup
  • Restored youthfulness
  • Enhanced self-confidence
  • Improved vision

Eyelid Surgery First Step

What’s the first step?

The first step in pursuing eyelid surgery is to schedule a consultation at Bianca Molina Plastic Surgery. During this initial appointment, Dr. Molina will carefully evaluate your eyes and facial anatomy, discuss your aesthetic goals, and assess your overall health to determine if you are a suitable candidate. She will review the surgical technique(s), potential risks and complications, and the projected results.

Our concierge team will then provide you with the details of the cost and help you schedule your surgery. Pre-operative instructions are also provided to help make your experience as successful as possible.

What to Expect on the Day of Eyelid Surgery

On the day of your procedure, Dr. Molina will review your surgical plan, which includes the techniques she will be using, as discussed in your consultation. Eyelid surgery may be done awake under local anesthesia and with some medication to help you relax, or it can be done with IV or general anesthesia. The choice of anesthesia depends on the patient and on the extent of the surgery that is necessary.

The choice of incision depends on each patient. Fat is either removed or repositioned, and skin is addressed at the end. For lower eyelid surgery, the incisions to access the lower eyelid fat and deeper tissues are made either inside the eye and are completely hidden or just below the eyelashes. For the upper eyelid, an incision is made externally on the skin and hidden in a natural crease. In this way, excess upper eyelid skin is removed, and fat can be targeted when needed. The upper eyelid incision will have sutures that are removed in 5-6 days.

The postoperative team will move you into a recovery room area while you recover from anesthesia if anesthesia is used.  Before you leave, Dr. Molina and the other members of the surgical team will ensure you are safe to go home.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

Icing is very important in the first few days after eyelid surgery in order to control swelling. A cool compress can be gently applied to the eyes to soothe any discomfort. Pain medication is also given postoperatively. During the recovery from upper and lower eyelid surgery, it is very important to rest and avoid strenuous activities. Bruising and swelling should begin to dissipate in about 7-10 days.
