Chin & Neck Liposuction

Chin & Neck Liposuction Introduction

Excess fat in areas such as the neck and chin can give the perception of being heavier and older than you actually are. Plastic surgeons can definitively treat facial fullness in the neck and chin areas with liposuction. At Bianca Molina Plastic Surgery in Lower Manhattan, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bianca Molina offers this procedure to patients all over New York as an effective way to get rid of stubborn fat that is oftentimes untouched by traditional diet and exercise efforts.

What is Chin & Neck Liposuction?

Chin, or submental liposuction, is a minimally invasive procedure that reduces the double-chin appearance and provides a smoother, firmer, and more defined jaw and neckline. The procedure can be performed under local or twilight anesthesia and requires a short recovery time of a few days. Submental or chin liposuction also requires tiny incisions placed in naturally formed lines under the chin and, sometimes, behind the earlobes.

Chin & Neck Liposuction First Step

What’s the first step?

If you are interested in chin & neck liposuction, the first step is to schedule your consultation with Dr. Bianca Molina in our Lower Manhattan office. When you come in for your appointment, you will be able to ask any questions about the procedure, address your areas of concern, and learn about potential options to help you achieve your desired aesthetic goals. She will be happy to evaluate you and determine if liposuction in the neck or chin will be beneficial.

After your exam and consultation with Dr. Molina, our concierge team will schedule your procedure and provide pre-operative instructions to help make your surgery and recovery as smooth and successful as possible.

What to expect on the day of Chin & Neck Liposuction surgery

On the day of your chin & neck liposuction, Dr. Molina will meet you first thing to review the surgical plan incision placement, perform surgical markings, and take “before” photos. The procedure is oftentimes done awake under local anesthesia but can be done under sedation or general anesthesia if you and Dr. Molina feel that’s a better option for you.

Dr. Molina will begin your procedure by injecting the entire area with a numbing medication, which will both block pain and minimize bleeding. This also makes it easier to suction fat during the procedure. Up to three tiny incisions are made underneath the chin and behind the earlobes. Various access points allow for cross-hatching and more efficient fat removal, giving smoother results.

Liposuction is performed through the incisions with a very thin rod called a cannula, which is connected to a suction machine and passed evenly throughout the treatment zones. Once the fat is removed, Dr. Molina will close each incision with one or two small sutures. Gauze pads are placed over the incisions, and an elastic compression garment, or chin strap, is applied to help with swelling.

Submental liposuction usually takes approximately one hour to complete.

Chin & Neck Liposuction Recovery

After your surgery is complete, we will monitor you in our recovery room until Dr. Molina releases you that same day. Before you leave, you will be provided with prescription pain medication, should you need it, as well as post-op instructions.

After the first day after surgery, you can remove the dressings over your incisions and replace them with bandaids as needed. You will need to wear the chin compression garment for ten days after surgery. Bruising and swelling are variable between patients, though most bruising is fully resolved by ten days. Swelling is markedly improved within the first two weeks after surgery, but it takes a full 3-6 months for final results to be seen.

Patients are usually able to return to most of their activities the day after surgery if they don’t require heavy lifting, bending over, being upside down, or other types of physical strain. We encourage patients to avoid major exercise for about two weeks.
