Gynecomastia Introduction

Many men suffer from enlarged breast tissue, which is referred to as gynecomastia. This can be a source of embarrassment for many men. Gynecomastia is generally not resolved with diet and exercise alone and can be a side effect of certain medications or hormone changes. Gynecomastia surgery is commonly done to restore a more masculine chest appearance.

If you are considering male breast reduction surgery in New York City, visit Dr. Bianca Molina. Dr. Molina is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon passionate about aesthetics and eager to help you achieve a more masculine physique. Find out how Dr. Molina can bring symmetry and definition back to your chest.

What is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery, also referred to as a male breast reduction, removes excess breast tissue. This popular procedure can include liposuction, excision (using larger incisions), or a combination of both. Patients who choose to have this procedure report improved self-confidence, enhanced appearance, and reduced discomfort that can result from larger breasts. In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). In these cases, the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved, and excess skin may be reduced.

What Are the Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery?

For patients struggling with gynecomastia in New York City, surgery can offer the following benefits:

  • Improved confidence in your appearance look
  • Improved chest contours to look more masculine
  • Confidence in wearing certain types of clothing

  • Confidence to participate in physical activities as well as intimacy

Gynecomastia surgery can have a long-lasting impact on patients’ lives. If you have been struggling with how gynecomastia has affected your life, set up a consultation with Dr. Molina.

Gynecomastia First Step

What’s the first step?

The first step to treating Gynecomastia is to call our practice and schedule a consultation with Dr. Molina in our Manhattan office. During this session, you will speak with Dr. Molina, who will walk you through the steps of the procedure and its benefits. She will physically examine the breast tissue, position, and underlying chest anatomy. She will also understand your goals to determine whether you are a good candidate. The consultation is also your opportunity to discuss any other cosmetic or medical concerns with Dr. Molina so she can make the best recommendations tailored to you.

What to Expect on the Day of Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastis Surgery is performed under general anesthesia at an accredited facility. Dr. Molina will see you prior to surgery and address any last-minute concerns.

General anesthesia is administered once in the operating room and you are fully asleep. Dr. Molina will begin the surgery using one or more of the following techniques:

  • Liposuction: In cases where gynecomastia is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue, liposuction techniques alone may be used. This requires the insertion of a cannula, a thin hollow tube, through a few small incisions. The cannula is moved back and forth in a controlled motion to loosen the excess fat, which is then removed from the body by vacuum suction.
  • Direct Excision: Excision techniques are recommended for removing glandular breast tissue or excess skin to correct gynecomastia. Excision is also necessary if the areola is reduced or the nipple will be repositioned to a more masculine location on the chest.

Once the surgery is complete, Dr. Molina will close the incisions, and you will be placed in a compressive vest to help limit postoperative swelling and bleeding. Depending on the extent of the surgery, you may or may not have drains placed.

Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery

We recommend arranging transportation to and from our clinic so that you can rest after your surgery. After your surgery, dressings or bandages will be applied to your incisions, and an elastic bandage or compression vest support will minimize swelling and support your new chest contour as it heals. A small tube is temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect.

Dr. Molina and her team will go over a schedule of instructions that explain how to care for the wound site, change bandages, and which pain medicines are safe to take to aid in your healing. You will be advised to avoid strenuous physical activity for a certain period to prevent healing complications.
