What is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, removes fat, breast tissue, and skin from the breasts, followed by reshaping and elevating to create a smaller, more proportionate breast size. For those with large breasts, breast reduction surgery can ease discomfort and improve appearance. It might also help improve self-image and the ability to take part in physical activities.

Breast Reduction First Step

What’s the first step?

The first step to getting a breast reduction is to call our Manhattan practice and schedule a consultation. During this session, you will speak with Dr. Molina, who will walk you through the steps of the procedure and surgical techniques. She will assess the issues you are currently dealing with to determine the size and scope of your breast reduction. The consultation is also your opportunity to discuss your concerns and goals with Dr. Molina so she can make the best recommendations tailored to your needs.

What to Expect On the Day of Breast Reduction Surgery

Before your surgery, Dr. Molina will take photos of your breasts to map out the exact places she will make the incision. She will also give you a set of instructions to prepare your body for surgery, including fasting for a certain amount of time or avoiding certain medications such as blood thinners.

A breast reduction is done under general anesthesia, which an Anesthesiologist gives. All surgeries are done in an accredited operating room.

During the procedure, Dr. Molina will:

  • Make an incision around the nipple and areola and down each breast
  • Remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce the size of each breast
  • Reshapes the breast and resets the nipple and areola, giving a lifted appearance

At the end of surgery, sterile dressings will be applied to the incisions, and you will be placed in a surgical bra.

You will recover from anesthesia in a private recovery room and, once you are ready, will be sent home.

Breast Reduction Recovery

We advise all breast reduction patients to arrange transportation to and from our practice so that they can rest and heal after this major surgery. For the first days or weeks after surgery, your breasts will probably feel tender, or they might be swollen and bruised. You will be given detailed pain management information and medication to help you through the healing period. A surgical bra that closes in front is worn to support the breasts.

Dr. Molina recommends limiting physical activity for 4 to 6 weeks while the breasts heal and wearing an approved surgical bra at all times to allow the breasts to heal and reduce swelling.

Scars fade over time, and Dr. Molina will monitor your progress during your follow-up appointments and provide you with scar treatment recommendations.
