What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is an aesthetic plastic surgery that addresses women’s concerns about the size, shape, or symmetry of their breasts.

There are many important decisions to make when it comes to breast augmentation. Breast augmentation is done using breast implants or fat transfer in order to increase the size of the breasts. Below are options for breast augmentation.

Implant Selection Options

Choosing your breast implants is widely considered to be the more exciting and empowering part of your breast enhancement journey. Dr. Bianca Molina will guide you through the options, helping you choose what best complements your body and personal goals and creating a surgical plan designed to give you a look that is uniquely yours.

Whether you’re looking for a subtle, lifted look with a moderate profile or a fuller, more dramatic shape with a high-profile implant, the decision is completely up to you. This is your chance to feel confident and embrace the opportunity to enhance your body naturally and correctly. This is your transformation, so at the end of the day, it’s all about choosing what best reflects your personal style and boosts your self-assurance.

Type of Implant Filler

  • Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone gel breast implants are often the most popular choice for breast augmentation because they better mimic the look and texture of natural breast tissue. Sometimes called “gummy bear” implants, silicone implants are filled with a cohesive gel, which allows them to maintain their shape while still feeling soft and flexible, even in the rare case of rupture.

Silicone implants also provide a consistent and predictable result, with less risk of visible rippling compared to saline implants. Dr. Molina uses only the newest generation of FDA-approved silicone implants in her practice, ensuring you receive the highest quality and most advanced options available for your breast augmentation.

  • Saline Breast Implants

Saline-filled breast implants consist of a silicone outer shell filled with a sterile saline solution. Since they are filled during surgery, their key advantage is their flexibility and adjustability. Dr. Molina can adjust the volume to achieve your desired, customized size.

While saline implants may not feel as natural as silicone implants due to the fluid-filled nature of the material, many patients still prefer them for various reasons. Some individuals choose saline implants because they know others who have had them or feel more comfortable with the idea of a saline solution inside the body. The outer silicone shell still provides a smooth, firm structure; for some, the look and feel are perfectly satisfying.

  • Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

Not all New York City breast augmentation patients are comfortable with breast implants and prefer a natural approach. Autologous fat transfer, or fat transfer to the breasts, is a way to modestly increase the size of your breasts using your own fat.

In this type of breast augmentation procedure, Dr. Molina uses liposuction to remove excess fat in certain areas of the body. The excess fat is then purified and transferred to the breasts to create a fuller appearance or improved shape.

Implant Size

During your consultation, Dr. Molina will help determine the best implant size based on several key factors, including your body type, desired silhouette, and the characteristics of your natural breast tissue.

It’s important to remember that implant size and cup size don’t always align as expected. Cup size can vary significantly between different brands and styles of bras and even from one person to another, making it an unreliable goal for your final results.

Instead, Dr. Molina focuses on achieving a balanced, proportional enhancement that complements your unique anatomy and goals. Whether you’re looking for a more subtle boost or a fuller, more dramatic look, the aim is to create natural-looking results that are in harmony with your overall body shape and personal preferences.

Implant Shape

Implants generally come in two main shapes: round and teardrop. Selecting the right implant shape is important for achieving your desired breast augmentation results. Round implants tend to create a fuller, more youthful look, with even projection across the breast and are often chosen by women seeking a more enhanced or dramatic result. On the other hand, teardrop implants offer a more natural shape, with less fullness at the top and more volume at the bottom, closely imitating the natural slope of the breast.

The shape you choose will depend on your personal aesthetic goals, body type, and the look you’re hoping to achieve. Dr. Molina will work with you to help select the ideal implant shape, ensuring that it complements your overall anatomy and delivers the most natural, flattering result possible.

Implant Placement

Dr. Molina will carefully consider the best placement for your breast implants, taking into account factors such as your breast anatomy, skin elasticity, and desired results.

Implants can be placed either submuscular (under the muscle) or subglandular (above the muscle), with each option offering distinct advantages. Submuscular placement often provides a more natural look, especially for women with less breast tissue, while subglandular placement may allow for quicker recovery and a more pronounced projection.

By evaluating your unique body and goals, Dr. Molina will recommend the most suitable approach to help achieve a balanced, natural-looking enhancement. The ultimate aim is to ensure the placement complements your anatomy and gives you the results you’ve envisioned, enhancing your shape and boosting your confidence.

Incision Placement

Choosing the right incision placement for your breast augmentation is an important decision that depends on several factors, including your body type, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals.

There are several common incision options for breast augmentation: inframammary (under the breast), periareolar (around the areola), and transaxillary (in the armpit).

  • The inframammary incision, made along the natural fold of the breast, is the most popular choice and offers a discreet, easily hidden scar.
  • The periareolar incision, made around the edge of the areola, can also conceal the scar well. However, it may only be ideal for some patients, particularly if the areola is large or shaped to limit incision placement.
  • The transaxillary incision, made in the armpit, avoids any scarring on the breast itself, but it may restrict the types or sizes of implants that can be used.

Each option has its benefits, and Dr. Molina will help you choose the best incision type based on your body, goals, and implant preferences.

Dr. Molina will guide you in selecting the best incision option based on your body, goals, and the type of implant you choose, ensuring that the final result is both beautiful and discreet.

Breast Augmentation First Step

What’s the first step?

If you’re interested in having a breast augmentation by Dr. Molina in New York City, the first step is to schedule an initial consultation. She will discuss your medical history and understand your aesthetic goals during your consultation. After performing a physical exam, Dr. Molina will discuss with you the techniques of breast augmentation in order to determine the best approach for your goals.

Dr. Molina listens carefully to what patients want regarding breast size, and both the surgeon and the patient decide what size implant to use. Many factors go into deciding what size implant to use, such as the desired cup size, the current size of the breasts and frame of the patient, the difference between saline and silicone implants, and the location where the implant will be placed (subglandular, submuscular, subfascial), among others. You can also sample implants and try on sizers during your consultation.

What to Expect on the Day of Breast Augmentation Surgery

When you arrive on the day of surgery, Dr. Molina and the anesthesia and nursing staff will see you to ensure you are comfortable and ready to go. Breast augmentation is done under general anesthesia in an accredited operating room.

Dr. Molina performs breast augmentation with implants through a small incision hidden in the skin fold underneath the breast or inframammary fold. During surgery, sterile sizes are used to ensure the preoperatively chosen implant will fit safely and appropriately within the breast. Dr. Molina uses a Keller funnel and a “no-touch technique” to ensure the implant is handled minimally prior to placement.

Breast augmentation with fat transfer requires first liposuction, usually from the abdomen, flanks, back, or thighs. The fat removed via liposuction is then purified and prepared for transfer into the breasts. Generally, an equal volume is transferred to each breast unless an asymmetry is present. Fat is injected through tiny cannulas through small, 1-2 mm incisions and spread throughout the breast.

Breast augmentation surgery takes approximately one to two hours.

At the end of the operation, Dr. Molina will close the incisions using layered sutures in the breast tissue and skin. A dressing is applied, and you will be placed in a postoperative bra for support.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

You will be observed in the recovery room after breast augmentation until you are discharged home by Dr. Molina and the anesthesia team. Breast augmentation is done as outpatient surgery. Most patients rest the first day or two after breast augmentation and take a week or two off of work.

Activities and exercise or gradually increase, typically at 6-8 weeks, with no restrictions.

Dr. Molina will see you regularly to assess your healing progress and ensure the implants are in a good position.
