Liposuction

Liposuction Introduction

Excess fat in areas such as the neck and chin can give the perception of being heavier and older than you actually are. Plastic surgeons can definitively treat facial fullness in the neck and chin areas with liposuction. At Bianca Molina Plastic Surgery in Lower Manhattan, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bianca Molina offers this procedure to patients all over New York as an effective way to get rid of stubborn fat that is oftentimes untouched by traditional diet and exercise efforts.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that uses specialized cannulas to suction and remove fat from specific areas of the body, such as the stomach, back, hips, thighs, arms, or neck. Liposuction removes extra pinch fat that you can pinch in your hand, underneath the skin. It’s important to remember that liposuction isn’t considered an overall weight-loss method or a weight-loss alternative, but allows target areas to be contoured.

Liposuction may work for you if you have a lot of body fat in specific places but otherwise have a stable body weight. When you gain weight, fat cells get bigger. Liposuction lowers the number of fat cells in a specific area by removing them. Fat cells after liposuction do not grow back, but if you gain weight after liposuction, the existing fat cells will enlarge. As long as you maintain your weight with healthy lifestyle habits, the resulting shape changes after liposuction are usually permanent.

Another thing to keep in mind is the skin-overlying areas that were liposuctioned. If you have good skin tone and elasticity, the skin will retract over the areas of liposuction and appear tight. If your skin is thin and has poor elasticity, the skin in the treated areas may appear loose. Liposuction doesn’t necessarily improve the appearance of cellulite or help the appearance of stretch marks.

Dr. Molina does perform Lipo 360. As the name suggests, Lipo 360 targets your abdomen, midsection, and back – the full 360 degrees. This allows her to target the entire trunk to leave you with a smooth midsection. This may be done alone or in combination with liposuction of other body areas.

What are the Benefits of Liposuction?

Liposuction removes fat from areas of the body that don’t respond to diet and exercise. These include the:

  • Abdomen
  • Bra roll
  • Back
  • flanks
  • Upper arms
  • Buttock (banana roll)
  • Chest
  • Hips and thighs (inner thigh, outer thigh, saddle bags)
  • Inner knee
  • Chin and neck

Liposuction can also be used to reduce extra breast tissue in men — a condition called gynecomastia.

Who Are The Best Candidates For A Liposuction Procedure?

Liposuction could be a great option for you if you are bothered by excess fat deposits that don’t respond to diet or exercise.

Ideal candidates for liposuction are:

  • Patients looking to target specific areas for contouring
  • Adults within 30% of their ideal weight who have firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone
  • Healthy individuals who do not have a life-threatening illness or medical conditions that can impair healing
  • Nonsmokers/non-vapers
  • Individuals with a positive outlook and specific goals in mind for body contouring

Liposuction First Step

What’s the first step?

To get started on your liposuction journey, we invite you first to schedule a consultation with Dr. Molina. During this session, Dr. Molina will listen and seek to understand your reasons for pursuing liposuction. Dr. Molina will assess your medical history to ensure this procedure can be safely performed. She will then perform a comprehensive physical exam of the target areas that are to be treated and take medical photographs. Dr. Molina will then discuss her surgical plan in detail with you, outlining her surgical technique and what is achievable with liposuction.

Our Concierge Team will provide you with pricing for liposuction, based on the extent of the areas to be treated, in addition to factoring in the facility and anesthesia fees. Once you are ready, we will schedule your surgery at a time that works for you.

Before surgery, our team ensures you have all the information to feel comfortable, including preoperative instructions, medication instructions, expectations for the day of surgery, and postoperative care instructions.

What to Expect on the Day of Liposuction Surgery

On the day of your surgery, Dr. Molina will meet with you first to walk through the procedure and ensure all of your questions are answered. If sedation or general anesthesia is being used, you will meet the Anesthesia Team who will ensure your comfort throughout the entire procedure.

Dr. Molina will select from the following techniques:

Suction-assisted liposuction with tumescent – This is the most common type of liposuction. The surgeon injects tumescent, which is a mixture of saline and medications to help with pain control and limit blood loss in the areas being liposuctioned.  Small cuts, or stab incisions, are made in the skin in order to insert the liposuction cannulas and remove fat. The liposuction cannulas are connected to a suction machine which aids in suctioning the subcutaneous fat and removing it. A few strategically placed incisions are required to adequately treat target areas, which is done in a cross-hatched manner to ensure the smoothest result.

Power-assisted liposuction (PAL). This type of liposuction uses a special handpiece that vibrates and oscillates the liposuction cannulas in a back-and-forth manner. This allows for more efficient fat removal. It also can allow the surgeon to remove fat more accurately and quicker, which means a shorter operation and less anesthesia time.

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL). This type of liposuction is sometimes used in combination with traditional liposuction. During UAL, the surgeon inserts a metal rod or cannula that uses ultrasonic energy at the tip to break up fat cells and liquefy them, allowing for easier removal. This is especially useful in gynecomastia surgery where tissue tends to be thicker than in other areas of the body. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction may also be useful in revision liposuction.

Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL). During LAL, the surgeon inserts a small rod or cannula that has a laser tip. The laser tip heats up and transfers heat to the tissue, allowing for both smoother fat removal and a skin-tightening effect.

The duration of liposuction surgery depends on the number of areas being treated and the amount of fat to be removed. Safety is Dr. Molina’s number one priority for liposuction, as with any surgery. During liposuction surgery, the total volume of fat removed is closely monitored to ensure your safety.

*Once Dr. Molina has completed the surgery, you will be placed in a compression garment which will help to control postoperative swelling. You will be taken into the recovery room where you will be monitored to ensure you are recovered from anesthesia and your pain is under control. Postoperative instructions will be reviewed with you to be sure you understand everything and have no questions. You will need an approved escort to take you home after surgery.

Liposuction Recovery

After the procedure, you will be expected to walk around your home and eat a light diet, which can be progressed to your normal diet. Mild pain medication may be needed in the first few days after liposuction, and most patients report feeling a generalized soreness in the area that was treated. You will need to wear specialized compression garments around the areas that were liposuctioned in order to help limit and reduce swelling. Compression garments after liposuction are worn continuously for the first 4 weeks. We recommend using compression garments for 8 weeks to 3 months in total. Dr. Molina recommends most liposuction patients undergo lymphatic massage beginning the first week after surgery, which will help expedite your recovery and limit swelling.

You may need to wait a few days before going back to work. Most patients can resume full activities and unrestricted exercise at 6 weeks, but the exact timing will depend on your healing and comfort.
